Flexibility

Flexibility is very important to the proper function and well-being of your body. It is defined as “the total achievable excursion (within limits of pain) of a body part through its potential range of motion.” This includes the range of motion of the major joint involved, as well as all of the surrounding joints and soft tissue (ligaments and muscle).

Flexibility training is an essential part of any conditioning program to avoid injury and improve performance. However, it is commonly neglected, limiting ones improvement and allowing a greater opportunity for injuries to occur.

Injury to the body creates adaptive shortening of soft tissue as well as joint dysfunction. Joint dysfunction allows for further soft tissue shortening with increased stress placed upon the joints, creating a destructive cycle.

The goal of flexibility training is to develop adequate flexibility without causing injury or excessive joint laxity (lack of joint stability). Flexibility training includes stretching, and mobilization of the joints and soft tissues.
