The Journal of Hypertension (2007) volume 21, pgs 347-352. A study was conducted by Professor Bakris MD, Department of Medicine, Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago. The study proposed that structural abnormalities (misalignment) of the neck at the level of bone number one at the top of the neck (Atlas) creates increased pressure on your nervous system at the level of the brainstem resulting in increased blood pressure (hypertension). The study was conducted over an 8-week period using subjects diagnosed with stage one hypertension defined as:
- Minimum blood pressure value of 140/90.
- It is an early form of high blood pressure.
- May require treatment with medication, with frequent monitoring in order to avoid progression to stage two hypertension- 160/100.
The study used a Doctor of Chiropractic, chiropractic analysis including x-rays to confirm misalignment and a chiropractic procedure to correct the misalignment. X-rays were retaken at the end of the 8- week study to confirm correction of Atlas misalignment.
The study concluded that correction of the misalignment of Atlas was associated with a significant and sustained reduction in blood pressure with no adverse effects. There was an average of a 14-point drop in the systolic pressure (top number) and an 8-point drop in the diastolic pressure (bottom number) totaling a 22-point drop in blood pressure. This is the equivalent of using a 2 drug combination therapy to manage high blood pressure.
At the Active Healing Center we have mirrored these results exactly and have seen as high as a 37-point drop in overall blood pressure, 23-points off the systolic or top number and 14-point drop off the diastolic or bottom number. With the rehabilitation and wellness program that is performed these numbers are repeatable and sustainable. It is an easy consultation and evaluation to determine if you can be helped in lowering your blood pressure without medication.
As the study said, there are no adverse side effects to this treatment but there are a multitude of side effects with the drugs used to manage high blood pressure.
